TECNALIA is the largest centre of applied research and technological development in Spain, a benchmark in Europe and a member of the Basque Research and Technology Alliance. TECNALIA collaborates with companies and institutions to improve their competitiveness, people’s quality of life and achieve sustainable growth. We do it thanks to a team made up of almost 1,500 people (287 PhDs), 44% women – 56% men, who are passionate about technology and committed to building a better society.
The main scopes of action in TECNALIA are: Smart Manufacturing Digital Transformation, Energy Transition, Sustainable Mobility, Health and Food, Urban Ecosystem and Circular Economy.

TECNALIA’s research has a real impact on society and provides specific solutions to the major global challenges.
Its revenue in 2023 amounted to 137 million euros, 47% in revenue from activity with companies. In terms of impact, for every Euro invested by a company in R&D with TECNALIA, an average turnover increase of €13.6 is obtained.
In 2023, the Sale of Industrial Property Rights section recorded 7,2 million euros in income, with a portfolio of 741 patents. It took part in 17 New Technology-Based Companies (NTBC) with a capital attracted of 6,5 million euros. They generated a total of 104 jobs and a turnover of 9,6 million euros. TECNALIA is the fourth private Spanish organisation in European patent applications.
In Europe, TECNALIA has consolidated its position as the first private organisation in Spain in project contracting, participation and leadership under the European Commission’s HORIZON EUROPE programme, in partnership with over 100 Spanish companies.
In H2020 participated in 353 projects (coordinating 73 of them), with a H2020 EU Contribution of 173M€. In HORIZON EUROPE until now TECNALIA participates in 155 projects (coordinating 25 of them) with an EU Contribution of 88M€. TECNALIA is a member of EARTO and EUROTECH, linking together the most important research organisations in Europe.
Companies need multi-sector and multi-technology responses that are impossible to satisfy without the hybridization of technologies. TECNALIA has a multidisciplinary team and a network of strategic alliances at an international level to anticipate current and future needs.
In the latest awareness and positioning study carried out by the European Research Survey ERS in 2022, TECNALIA ranks first in R+D+i brand awareness.
TECNALIA Ventures is wholly owned subsidiary, for the commercialisation of innovative technology-based results, turning innovative technology assets into new profitable and sustainable businesses and generating economic value for society. TECNALIA Ventures focuses on accelerating the development of disruptive technologies to transform them into investable business opportunities and managing the portfolio of TECNALIA spin-offs, currently integrated by a portfolio of 15 start-ups in a wide range of sectors.
The University of the Basque Country (EHU/UPV), TECNALIA and Donostia International Physics Center (DISC) are the founding members of Euskampus (2010, http://euskampus.ehu.es/), a project with attained the qualification of International Campus of Excellence from the Spanish Ministry of Education (2010). Euskampus partners with the PRES of the Universities of Bordeaux in the Euskampus-Bordeaux Transborder Campus.
